PROFILE Ms. Hiroko Kanomata is a registered Patent Attorney who works primarily on design prosecution and trademark prosecution but also the preparation of expert opinion, litigation, licensing and consultation for various issues relating to intellectual property law. After receiving a B.A. from Tokyo Woman’s Christian University, Ms. Kanomata passed the Japanese Patent Attorney Examination in 1991 and joined Miyoshi & Miyoshi. Ms. Kanomata spent two years as a law clerk in Chicago with the U.S. firm Allegretti & Witcoff (now Banner & Witcoff).
She developed her expertise with emphasis on the field of Design Law and protection of industrial design. Previously, she sat upon the official committee to revise the Design Law in 1996, leading to its 1999 revision. She attended a diplomatic conference held in Geneva, Switzerland for the revision of the Hague Agreement as a representative of the JPAA. She also served as chairperson of the JPAA, and as a committee member contributing papers for the reports of two committees held by the Institute for Intellectual Property (IIP) to achieve JPO study projects.
She is a member of the Japanese Group of AIPPI. She served there as consultant for a research project entrusted by the Japan Patent Office, and as an editor of journals published by the group. She is also a member of the Design Study Group of the Japan Design Protection Association.
Ms. Kanomata is the author of numerous articles, commentaries, and books including “Commentary of Design Law” under co-authorship and published by LexisNexis Japan.
